Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph illustrates the participation of people for various acitivities at a social centre located in Melbourne, Australia from the year 200 to 2020.

Overall, majority of the people were interested in participating in film clubs and participation in musical performances was the lowest for most of the time. The number of people taking part in table tennis had the largest increase.

Participants of film club were fairly constant over the years as it started with 65 participants in 2000 which was the same for the year 2020 and the lowest number participants recoreded was 60 in 2010. This could be said the same for martial arts but with some fluctuations, the numbers were at almost 38 in 2000 which were also the same in 2020.

The members for amateur dramatics saw the highest decrease, it was at 38 in the year 2005 after which the number went down hill constantly as they reached their lowest of almost 10 in 2020. Meanwhile, participants of table tennis considerably increased after 2010 when the number was at 20 and reached almost 55 in 2020. Musical performances had not a single participant till 2005, after which it started to increase steadily by reaching almost 28 in the year 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends and making appropriate comparisons across the five activities. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, highlighting the most popular activity, the least popular overall, and the category with the most significant increase. However, there are some minor data inaccuracies in the body paragraphs (e.g., stating that film club started with 65 participants in 2000 and 2020 when the chart shows around 64, and misstating musical performances as reaching 28 in 2020 instead of roughly 18). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the key features and trends are generally well reported and supported with data from the graph, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or solid 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement with a distinct introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs grouping the activities logically. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'This could be said the same for'. However, some cohesive phrasing is slightly unnatural or clumsy (e.g., 'This could be said the same for martial arts'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the report. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional mechanical links prevent the flow from being entirely smooth. Progression is evident throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms like 'participation', 'fluctuations', 'considerably increased', and 'steadily'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'acitivities' instead of 'activities', 'recoreded' instead of 'recorded', and awkward phrasing like 'the number went down hill constantly'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of accuracy. The lexical range is sufficient to communicate the main ideas, but slips in spelling and precision restrict the score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and subordinate structures (e.g., 'The graph illustrates the participation of people for various activities...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'from the year 200 to 2020' (missing digit), 'majority of the people' (missing article 'the'), and 'Musical performances had not a single participant till 2005, after which it started to increase steadily by reaching almost 28'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
