Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all major features of the chart, providing an overview and mentioning trends such as the significant increase in table tennis and musical performances alongside the sharp decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that musical performances started in 2005 with 0 participants and went up to around 19 in 2020 (the actual data shows 18, which is acceptable), but for the film club, they confuse the data points, stating the number in 2000 was 65, went up to 70 before falling to 60 in 2010 (whereas the actual figures are 64, dropping slightly to 62 and 60). Furthermore, the response is incomplete, cutting off mid-sentence at the end. These inaccuracies and the truncated ending prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into introductory, overview, and body paragraphs, providing a basic structural framework. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'In contrast' are used to connect ideas and signal shifts between categories. However, the logical progression is hindered by confusing data referencing and the abrupt ending of the text, which trails off mid-sentence without concluding the final category (martial arts). Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall organization feels mechanical and disrupted by the incomplete nature of the writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with appropriate topic-related terms such as 'participants', 'social centre', 'fluctuated', and 'peak'. However, there are spelling errors ('tabble', 'performaces') and awkward lexical choices or collocations ('number of participant involved', 'experience a decline sharply', 'before rose throughout the year'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'fluctuated' and 'peak', but lacks precision and control, leading to frequent lexical slips that reflect a Band 5 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using temporal clauses and coordinating conjunctions. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with multiple errors including tense inconsistencies and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'before rose throughout the year', 'then it rose, at 20 in 2010 before reaching a peak of 50 number of individuals', 'then its fluctuated and fell'). Punctuation is also problematic, and the response cuts off abruptly at the end. These frequent grammatical and structural errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
