Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting on the different activities shown in the line graph, such as the film club, table tennis, and amateur dramatics. However, there are notable inaccuracies and contradictions in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that the proportion of the film club 'increased considerably', whereas the data shows it remained relatively stable around 60 to 66 participants. Furthermore, the description of table tennis mentions it reached '52 in 2020' (the chart shows around 54), and there are minor contradictions in the text regarding whether the film club remained unchanged or decreased. While an overview is attempted, it contains flawed interpretations of the visual data. This places the response in Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs grouped by activities, and an attempt at an overview. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'whereas', and 'Turning to the remaining figures' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and logical progression are sometimes hindered by confusing sentences and contradictory statements, such as describing the film club as both 'stable' and having 'increased considerably' in the overview. Paragraphing is present, but overall cohesion is mechanically handled rather than fully fluent, justifying a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting functional phrases like 'rose steadily', 'fluctuated throughout the period', and 'fell down gradually'. However, there are several noticeable lexical errors, incorrect word forms, and typos, such as 'on social place' instead of 'at a social centre', 'film clud', 'nummber', and 'orignal'. Less common vocabulary is attempted but frequently misapplied or accompanied by spelling mistakes. Communication is generally maintained, but the recurring inaccuracies cap the lexical score at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using conjunctions like 'whereas' and subordinate clauses. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, prepositions, and sentence construction, such as 'Amateur dramatics was stood at 26 number', 'its increased significantly', 'film club was remained unchanged', and 'it return to orignal number'. These errors occasionally cause slight awkwardness for the reader, though they do not completely obscure the intended meaning. This performance fits the Band 5.5 descriptor well.
