Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given line graph compares the number of people who particapted in different type of activities at a social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.

Overall, it is evident that most of the people participated in film club by far. While, the musical performances and amateur dramatics had the lowest number of participants. Whereas, the values for martial arts and table tennis can be seen fluctuating.

On the other hand, martial art started at approximately 36 participants in 2000 had shown a same pattern of fluctuations every 5 year and standing at 35 people in 2020.

While, musical performances and table tennis starting from 0 and 16, had shown a significant increase by having 16 and 55 numbers of participants in 2020 respectively. In contrast, the number of participants in amature dramatics decreased dramatically from 26 to 9.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the main trends and making appropriate comparisons across the five activities. The introduction correctly paraphrases the prompt, and the overview captures the dominant position of the film club as well as the low initial figures for musical performances and amateur dramatics. Key features are reported, such as the growth in table tennis and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are minor inaccuracies in reporting specific data points, such as stating that the film club was highest at 65 in 2000 (actual is around 64) and claiming it reached the same value in 2020 after fluctuating, whereas the visual data shows it rose to 66. Despite these minor discrepancies, the overall trends and comparisons are clearly articulated and meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear overall progression and is divided into logical paragraphs, separating the overview from the detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'While', 'On the other hand', and 'In contrast'. However, some of the linking words and transition phrases are used awkwardly or grammatically incorrectly, such as 'While, the musical performances...' and 'While, musical performances and table tennis...'. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, but the internal cohesion within sentences occasionally feels mechanical due to punctuation errors and run-on structures. Nevertheless, the relationships between the data points are mostly clear to the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as 'fluctuating', 'decrease', 'increase', and 'dramatically'. However, there are several lexical and spelling errors that detract from the precision of the writing, including 'particapted' instead of 'participated', 'type' instead of 'types', and 'amature' instead of 'amateur'. Collocations and word choices are generally understandable but lack the flexibility and precision associated with higher band scores. The repetition of basic phrases like 'number of participants' is noticeable, though acceptable for this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and adverbial clauses of time and contrast. However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas splitting prepositional phrases ('While, the musical performances...'). Additionally, some sentence structures are awkward or incomplete, such as 'martial art started at approximately 36 participants in 2000 had shown a same pattern...', which lacks a relative pronoun or auxiliary verb. Grammatical errors occur frequently throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication of the data.
