Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the main activities shown in the line graph, providing an overview and mentioning key trends such as the popularity of the film club and the decline in amateur dramatics. However, there are notable factual inaccuracies and contradictions in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that 'The least popular activity in 2020 was table tennis,' which directly contradicts the visual data showing table tennis at 54 participants, whereas amateur dramatics dropped to 6. Furthermore, there are slight inaccuracies in describing musical performances and table tennis trends. While all parts of the task are addressed, the presence of data misinterpretations places this response at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an overall structure consisting of an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, providing a basic framework for the information. However, progression within the body paragraphs is occasionally disjointed and mechanical. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or repetitively (e.g., excessive use of 'whereas' and 'on the other hand'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear logical cohesion, as some related details are scattered. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, contributing to a somewhat choppy reading experience. This aligns well with the Band 5.0 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate basic ideas about trends and data, such as 'popular', 'decline', 'increase', and 'steady'. However, the range is limited and repetitive, and there are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'toke pary' (took part), 'fiund' (found), and 'wad' (was). The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'drastic rise', but overall control lacks precision. Collocations are sometimes awkward, such as 'reached more than 50 participation'. These frequent errors in word formation and spelling place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses with 'whereas' and 'despite'. However, control over grammar is weak, with frequent errors that occasionally impede understanding. Examples include tense inconsistencies and awkward phrasing like 'the number of people took pary in' instead of 'taking part'. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'more than 60 participants was there' instead of 'were there'. Because complex structures are frequently faulty and errors are recurrent throughout the text, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
