Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising information from the line graph regarding participants at a social centre in Melbourne. However, the response falls severely short of the mandatory 150-word minimum, containing only 108 words. Consequently, the development of main features is inadequate, and key trends are largely omitted. Furthermore, there are several factual inaccuracies and confusions regarding the data; for instance, the student states that table tennis participation in 2017 was around 15 people (the graph shows 5-year intervals: 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020, so 2017 does not exist on the graph), and misreads the numbers significantly. Due to the under-length penalty and incomplete coverage of the task requirements, a low band score is warranted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into short paragraphs, including a single-sentence overview and an introductory paragraph. However, the logical progression is weak due to the fragmented nature of the text and the lack of proper cohesive devices. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are too brief and poorly developed. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall arrangement fails to guide the reader smoothly through the data comparisons. The mechanical use of transitions and disjointed data points restrict the score under this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a very basic and repetitive vocabulary range appropriate for simple communication, but struggles with accurate word choice and spelling. Examples of spelling errors include 'activies' instead of 'activities' and 'maximun' instead of 'maximum'. There is also an awkward collocation in 'dramatical fall', where 'dramatic drop' or 'sharp decline' would be more standard. While there is a minimal attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to the graph, frequent lexical errors and limited flexibility keep the score at a modest level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic past tense forms. There are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'maximun of the activies are shown increase over the periods' and 'the number of participants of Film club activity was the highest of other activies'. Punctuation is generally basic, and the frequent structural flaws occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Complex structures are rare and mostly inaccurate.
