Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the five activities shown in the line graph. An overview is present, identifying film club as the most popular activity and noting general upward or downward trajectories for others, such as table tennis and amateur dramatics. Key data points are correctly referenced, such as the film club starting at around 65 and ending around 66, and table tennis growing significantly from 15 to around 52. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some descriptions, such as stating that musical performances started from 2005 when the graph shows zero participants until 2010. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of Task 1 adequately, though the overview could be slightly more polished.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into four distinct paragraphs, presenting a logical structure with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific data. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'In contrast'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition between sentences can feel abrupt, and pronouns or linking expressions are not always used with complete precision. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the overall progression of ideas could be smoother to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'proportion', 'upward trend', and 'fluctuating'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'perticipants' instead of participants, 'deamatics' instead of dramatics, 'flactuating' instead of fluctuating, and 'dramatically down ward' instead of a dramatic downward trend. These errors detract from the overall lexical quality, though communication is not severely impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses introduced by 'while'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and sentence construction, such as 'film is the accounted largest proportion', 'amateur deamatics was gradually fall', and 'before grew up at around 52'. Punctuation also exhibits minor issues, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, placing this response firmly in the Band 5.5 range.
