Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate manages to cover the main features of the chart, noting the overall stability of the Film club and Martial arts, the sharp decline in Amateur dramatics, and the growth in Table tennis and Musical performances. An overview is present, although it is somewhat fragmented and placed at the beginning of the text. While some specific data points are slightly inaccurate compared to the raw data (for instance, stating that Amateur dramatics started at 27 when the chart shows 26, or that Musical performances started at 1), the overall trends are correctly identified and contrasted. To reach a higher band, the overview should be more cohesive and integrate all major trends without minor data inconsistencies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is arranged into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then breaking down specific categories in the body paragraphs. However, logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward transitions and poor sentence linking. For example, expressions like 'Same happened in the case of' and abrupt jumps between data points make the flow mechanical. Referencing and substitution are occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are underused or misused. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the essay, but the overall mechanical cohesion keeps this criterion at a modest level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common vocabulary such as 'stability', 'dramatical' (incorrect form of dramatic), and 'increment'. However, there are frequent word formation and spelling errors, such as 'activitist' instead of 'activity' or 'activities', 'gicen' instead of 'given', and 'frpm'. Precision is also lacking in phrases like 'interested people in various activities' rather than 'participants in various activities'. While meaning is generally conveyed, these lexical errors and awkward collocations place the response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in both in Film club'), incorrect prepositions ('fell over through out'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('number of participants is higher'). Punctuation is sometimes neglected, such as missing capitalisation or commas, and sentences often lack smooth syntactic linking. Although the meaning remains understandable, frequent errors in basic and intermediate structures prevent the score from reaching Band 6.0.
