Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all the main features of the chart and attempts comparisons where relevant. The overview correctly identifies the film club as having the largest proportion overall, and highlights key trends such as the upward trajectory of table tennis and musical performances. While the details generally align with the visual data—such as the film club starting around 64 and finishing near 66, and table tennis rising significantly from 16 to 54—there are some slight inaccuracies in specific data reporting, for example stating table tennis started with '15' or describing musical performances as starting from 2005 when the graph shows zero participants in 2005 and the rise beginning by 2010. However, the overall task requirements are met, and the main trends are adequately summarised, placing this at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into four paragraphs, providing a logical framework with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and paragraphing can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the abrupt grouping in the final body paragraph. Additionally, minor organizational issues within sentences, like 'ended with a up ward trend', detract slightly from the flow. Overall, the essay maintains a coherent structure with clear overall progression, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with appropriate topic-specific terms like 'participants', 'activities', 'trend', and activity names from the prompt. However, there are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'perticipants', 'up ward', 'flactuated', 'dtamatics', and 'minimally rise' instead of 'minimal rise'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items (e.g., 'proportion', 'approximately'), but the frequency of spelling slips and word-form inaccuracies restricts the score to Band 5.5, as these errors occasionally require the reader to slow down.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including missing prepositions or incorrect articles in the opening sentence ('in a particular country Australia'), tense confusion or awkward verb phrases ('grew up around 28', 'dropping at 5'), and typos such as 'was the largest participan group'. Punctuation and sentence structure errors are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader, which aligns closely with the Band 5.5 descriptors.
