Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and reporting key features and comparisons for the five categories. The main trends are successfully identified, such as the dominance of the film club and the dramatic reversal between table tennis and amateur dramatics. Most figures reported are accurate according to the chart, such as the film club starting at around 65 and table tennis rising significantly to approximately 52-54 in 2020. However, there are minor data inaccuracies, such as stating musical performances started in 2005 when the chart shows zero participants until 2010. Furthermore, 'amateur dtamatics' dropped to around 6 in 2020, but the student misread it as 5. Despite these minor data slips, the key features and comparisons are well selected and supported, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, solidifying a Band 6.0 rating due to minor omissions or inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overall summary, and two body paragraphs detailing specific trends. There is a clear logical arrangement, and cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'However', and 'In contrast' are used to structure the ideas. However, paragraphing and referencing can feel slightly mechanical or abrupt. For example, moving directly into the details without seamless transitions creates minor choppy points. While referencing is generally understandable, minor mechanical usage of cohesive markers prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the organization is coherent and easy to follow, justifying a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'proportion', 'upward trend', 'fluctuated', and 'gradually fell'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally marred by spelling or word-choice errors, such as 'flactuated' (fluctuated) and 'dtamatics' (dramatics). Phrasing like 'minimally rise' instead of 'minimal rise' or 'growing up' instead of 'increasing' also highlights limitations in word formation and collocation. Nonetheless, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main ideas clearly, making Band 6.0 an appropriate score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'While amateur dramatics slowly grew up around 28 in 2005 before dropping at 5 in 2020.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward prepositions throughout the text, including 'numbers of participants... in a particular country Australia' (missing preposition), 'slight fell at 60' (should be 'slight fall' or 'fell slightly'), and 'dropping at 5' (dropping to 5). Punctuation errors also appear, such as extra spaces before commas ('2000 ,'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear, placing the performance comfortably within the Band 6.0 category.
