Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the given time period. An overview is successfully provided, capturing the dominant status of the film club and the overall upward trends of table tennis and musical performances. Key data points are cited accurately, such as the film club starting around 65 and table tennis surging to around 52 in 2020. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some early data points, such as stating table tennis started with 15 in 2000 when the chart shows 16, and some descriptions of fluctuations are slightly over-generalized. Nevertheless, the main trends are clearly identified and supported with appropriate data from the visual. Overall, the task is addressed well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised and easy to follow. It begins with an introductory sentence, moves to a clear overall summary paragraph, and then breaks down the specific data points into logical body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general trends from specific figures. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', and 'In contrast', although some transitions could be smoother or more varied. Referencing is generally clear, though minor mechanical errors in spacing and punctuation slightly disrupt the flow. The progression of information is logical throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'surging', and 'gradually fell'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'film club was the largest participant group' instead of 'had the largest number of participants'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor stylistic awkwardnesses occur. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the main features and comparisons, allowing the message to be communicated without difficulty, fitting a solid Band 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses of time and contrast effectively. There is good control over past tense narrative structures required for historical data. However, a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as 'Martial arts showed fluctuations from 35 to 36 time period' and a missing full stop at the very end of the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher score. Complex structures are attempted with mixed success.
