Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task and presents a clear overview of the main trends. The student correctly identifies the film club as the most popular activity and highlights the contrasting trends between amateur dramatics and table tennis. Key data points are generally accurate, such as noting that table tennis rose drastically to around 55 in 2020. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting, such as stating that 'there was 35 participants' in 2000 for martial arts (which started at 36) and minor misreadings of percentages instead of raw participant numbers (e.g., '60% in 2010'). Despite these minor issues, the selection and reporting of main features are sufficient for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement and attempts to organise information logically by activity and time period. Paragraphing is used, though the sentences tend to run together or trail off abruptly at the end ('After that that it comtinued its u'). Cohesive devices are used, but referencing is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and punctuation errors disrupt the flow. For instance, sentences are occasionally fused together without proper spacing or punctuation (e.g., 'over 20 year periods, with the film club', '2010.before recoverd increase modorately'). While the progression of ideas is generally understandable, these cohesive and mechanical flaws place the response solidly at Band 5.5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'surged', 'fluctuated', and 'dramatically'. However, there are frequent word-choice and spelling errors that impede precision and lower the lexical score. Examples include 'participanting' instead of participating, 'recoverd increase modorately', and using percentage signs ('60%', '28 %') when describing raw participant numbers. Furthermore, some terms are misused or awkwardly collocated. Because the vocabulary range is sufficient to convey the main points despite noticeable errors, this meets the criteria for Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('activities that experienced') and introductory prepositional phrases. However, control over grammar and punctuation is weak, with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. Notable issues include subject-verb agreement errors ('there was 35 participants'), missing articles, tense inconsistencies, and fragments (e.g., 'Musical performances, starting with 0, It was rose notably'). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, notably missing proper nouns like 'melbourne'. Due to the frequency of grammatical errors and faulty complex structures, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
