Student answer (Band 5.0)

This graph represents the number of people doing different activities for a time span of 20 years i.e. ([redacted phone]) at one of the social centres of Melbourne, Australia. I,ll be describing the fact and figures this graph presented.

First of all, if we talk about the film club, it almost remained same about 64 participants, with a slight dip during these 20 years.

If we talk about martial arts, the number of participants first took slight dip and then a slight raise but ultimately falling at almost the exact same number it was in 2020, that is almost 37 participants.

If we talk about the dramatics, the number of participants has been lost seriously in between these 20 years. It decreased from 26 and is just left with only 7 or 8 persons.

Next, in table tennis, the players are increased from 17 to 54. That's aboslutely an impressive hike.

Lately and lastly, the number of persons in musical performances remaied 0 from 2000 to 2005, but then it started raising and ultimately reached 15 people in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all the main activities presented in the line graph, including the film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical performances. However, the response suffers from an inappropriate personal tone in the introduction ('I,ll be describing the fact and figures'), which is unsuitable for an Academic Task 1 report. Furthermore, some data points are slightly inaccurate, such as stating musical performances reached '15 people in 2020' when the graph shows around 18. The overview is weak, lacking a clear summary of the overall trends. Because certain data points are misread and the register is too informal, the response falls into the Band 5.0 range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is structured into a short introduction and several single-sentence paragraphs focusing on individual activities. However, the lack of a proper overview paragraph and the highly repetitive use of conversational transition phrases ('First of all, if we talk about...', 'If we talk about...', 'Next...', 'Lately and lastly...') weaken the overall cohesion and logical progression. Paragraphing is inadequate because the body paragraphs are fragmented into isolated sentences rather than grouped conceptually or chronologically. Cohesive devices are mechanical and overused, pulling the coherence score down to Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, featuring conversational phrasing like 'doing different activities', 'slight dip', 'slight raise', and 'lost seriously'. There are also spelling errors and typos, such as 'aboslutely' instead of 'absolutely' and 'remaied' instead of 'remained'. While the writer attempts some variation with words like 'participants' and 'hike', the overall lexical range is limited and contains noticeable errors that detract from the academic tone required for this task, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several awkward constructions and grammatical slips, such as 'the players are increased from 17 to 54' (inappropriate passive/tense usage) and 'ultimately falling at almost the exact same number' (awkward prepositional phrasing). Punctuation and formatting also show weaknesses, including unneeded parentheses and a comma splice in the opening sentence ('i.e. (2000-2020)'). Frequent errors across complex forms place this response solidly at Band 5.0.
