Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided line graph illustrates the data about the Australian people joining for societal activity in Melbourne between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, film club accounted for the highest figure over the period. While participants join all other activities from from 2000, people started joining to musical performances from 2005. Only amateur dramatics showed steep decline after a rise in 2005.
About 63 citizens joined film club in 2000 which recorded the largest share by far and almost remained the same till 2020 by attracting 65 participators. Although table tennis were not so popular between 2000 and 2010, it surged sharply as more than 50 people joined this activity by 2020. Musical performances attracted only 11 people at 2010 yet by 2020 18 people found it more interesting.
Martial arts depicted marginal fluctuations throughout the 20 years. In 2000 and 2020 around 36 participators joined this societal activity. Following that amateur dramatics was the only sector where participators lost their interest greatly. About 26 citizens joined in the beginning but in 2020 it came down to only 6.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five categories over the twenty-year period. An overview is provided, highlighting the film club's dominance and the contrasting trends of other activities. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the film club starting at around 63 and ending at 65, and amateur dramatics declining steeply from 26 down to 6. The student also correctly notes that table tennis surged significantly and that musical performances started later in the period. While some minor figures are slightly generalized, the overall selection of data is well-judged and directly answers the prompt requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is clearly organized into four paragraphs, following a logical progression from introduction and overview to body paragraphs detailing specific categories. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Although', 'Following that', and 'In 2000 and 2020'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing could be smoother in places (e.g., 'table tennis were' has a minor subject-verb agreement slip affecting cohesion within the clause). Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related activities, ensuring an overall coherent arrangement throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as 'accounted for', 'surged sharply', 'marginal fluctuations', and 'steep decline'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'Australian people joining for societal activity' instead of 'social activities', and 'participators' instead of 'participants'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the data presented.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses effectively (e.g., 'While participants join all other activities from 2000...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies ('participants join' instead of 'joined'), preposition errors ('joining to musical performances' and 'joined in the beginning'), and a subject-verb agreement issue ('table tennis were'). Despite these frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede overall communication, and a sufficient variety of structures is attempted.
