Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key features and comparisons. The writer successfully reports the main trends, such as the dominance of the film club, the dramatic fall of amateur dramatics, and the significant growth in table tennis and musical performances. There are minor inaccuracies in data reporting (for example, stating that amateur dramatics started at 26 and went to 30 in 2005, when the chart shows it went from 26 to 28, and stating martial arts ended at 37 instead of 36), but these are slight and do not detract from a clear overall summary. The response satisfies all requirements for a Band 7 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organised with a clear progression throughout. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by an overall summary statement, and then details specific trends in subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'On the other hand', 'In general', and 'Moreover', though referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. While it meets the criteria for Band 7, minor lapses in cohesion prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items and phrases such as 'significant decline', 'surged', 'fluctuation', and 'plunged'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'number of participations' instead of 'number of participants', and awkward phrasing like 'the amateur dramatics nearly 26 number of participants'. Spelling is generally good, but the lexical control has occasional lapses that place it firmly at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures with subordinating conjunctions like 'although' and 'after being consistent for five years'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as missing verbs ('The amateur dramatics nearly 26 number of participants'), redundant words ('tracks the the number'), and occasional article errors. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score than 6.0.
