Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an appropriate overview and detailing the key trends and features shown in the graph. The main features, such as the dominance of the film club and the contrasting trends between table tennis and amateur dramatics, are clearly identified and supported with specific data points. While there are some minor numerical inaccuracies when compared to the precise gridlines (for instance, stating the film club started at 65 rather than 64, or writing 'negligible incline' when the numbers dropped overall), these do not detract from the clear and effective reporting of the overall trends. The response successfully satisfies the requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 7.0 level, as it addresses all parts with relevant data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is clearly organised into logical paragraphs, with a distinct introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to different activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly' are used to guide the reader through the data and make comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of information. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, preventing the response from reaching higher bands. Overall, the logical organisation and clear progression throughout the text align well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, utilising terms like 'incline', 'decline', 'rebounded', 'fluctuate', 'skyrocketed', and 'constant'. There are several spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, such as 'Austraila', 'prefered', 'flim', 'flucuate', 'dramatic' instead of 'dramatics', and 'musicial'. Despite these errors, the lexical range is adequate for the task, and the intended meaning is always clear, allowing the reader to understand the comparisons easily. This performance sits comfortably within the Band 6.0 range, as the vocabulary is adequate but marred by noticeable spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinate clauses and comparative structures effectively (e.g., 'whereas amateur dramatics had a decline over the period' and 'before it fell sharply to 7 participants in 2020'). There are a few grammatical and mechanical inaccuracies, such as missing articles ('graph shows that', 'an slight increase') and minor prepositional inconsistencies. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of sentences are grammatically sound. The control of grammar and sentence structure corresponds well to a Band 6.5, which rounds to a Band 6.5 or is appropriately placed at 6.5 based on error frequency and complexity.
