Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on all five activities shown in the graph over the twenty-year period. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the main trends such as the film club's dominance and the upward trajectories of table tennis and musical performances. Key features and comparisons are appropriately selected and reported, such as the dramatic rise in table tennis and the steady decline of amateur dramatics. The figures and trends cited generally match the visual data well, with appropriate approximations used. The response is fully developed and well-focused on the task requirements, easily earning a Band 7.5 to 8.0 level of achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped logically, with an introductory paragraph, an overall trend summary, and subsequent paragraphs detailing specific categories. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Ultimately'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body points. Referencing and progression are clear, allowing the reader to follow the data comparison easily. This aligns well with the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision to describe trends and data changes. Examples of appropriate lexical items include 'retained its position', 'steady rise', 'minor fluctuations', and 'gradual decline'. There are a few minor lexical slips, such as 'took park' instead of 'took part' and 'most participated activity' instead of 'most popular activity' or 'activity with the highest participation'. However, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow precise communication of the graph's data, reflecting a solid Band 6.5 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Examples include passive and active constructions such as 'A rise could be seen' and 'Martial arts remained steady despite some minor fluctuations.' There are a few minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as missing articles ('at social centre' instead of 'at a social centre') and slight prepositional awkwardness ('seen at number of participants' instead of 'seen in the number of participants'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
