Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons across the five activities over the twenty-year period. An appropriate and clear overview is provided at the end, highlighting the dominant role of the film club, the stability of martial arts, the significant rise in table tennis, and the sharp decline in amateur dramatics alongside the emergence of musical performances. The data points cited, such as the film club starting at around 65 and table tennis rising from 18 to 52, align well with the visual data. The selection of features is balanced and accurate, fully satisfying the requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 7.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The report displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs grouping related activities, and a summary overview. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "At first glance", "Moving further", and "In contrast", though some transitions feel slightly formulaic. Referencing and paragraphing are managed appropriately, ensuring the reader can easily follow the comparisons made between the different social centre activities. Overall cohesion supports a solid Band 7.0 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision when describing trends and data. Phrases like "relatively stable", "drastically decreased", and "significant increase" are used correctly. However, there are some minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as "contributors under film club" instead of "participants in the film club", and "musical performances were stood at 0" instead of "stood at zero". Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows the communication of data to remain clear, meriting a Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and comparative constructions. There are instances of good grammatical control, but also several errors. For example, "at particular social centre" misses a necessary article, "number of participants which were indulged" is unnatural and grammatically awkward, and "number of participants... were stood at 0" contains a passive voice error. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0.
