Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons across the five activities between 2000 and 2020. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the highest participation (Film club) and notable trajectories (table tennis and amateur dramatics). Key data points are cited accurately from the visual data, such as the film club starting at around 64 and ending at 66, and table tennis surging to 54 in 2020. However, there are minor slips in data reporting, such as describing musical performances as zero in 2005 (which is accurate) but stating it rose to 20 when the chart shows approximately 18. Overall, the task is well-addressed with relevant and supported ideas, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introduction is followed by an effective overview paragraph, which is then elaborated upon in logical body paragraphs categorising the activities based on their trends. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', and 'while'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the general overview from the detailed body points. However, there is some minor mechanical referencing and minor cohesion flaws, such as the abrupt transition in the final paragraph starting with 'Number of participants in martial arts...' without an introductory linking phrase. Despite these minor issues, the overall progression is clear, fitting the Band 7.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common and topic-specific items such as 'participants', 'dramatic increase', 'steady decline', and 'remained stable'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as using 'candidates' instead of 'participants' or 'attendees' in the introduction, and referring to participants as 'contestants' in the third paragraph, which is inappropriate for a social centre. Furthermore, awkward phrasing such as 'remained plateaued by having around 35 number of participants' detracts from precision. These errors show an attempt at flexibility with occasional word-choice and collocation issues, aligning well with a Band 6.0 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with time markers and comparative structures successfully. There are several instances of accurate grammar, but also persistent errors in preposition use and phrasing. For instance, the writer states 'decreased to 60 in 2010 before reaching above 65 participants' and 'by having just above 50 participants', which sound unnatural. In the final paragraph, 'by from around 25 contestants' contains a double prepositional error. While these errors occur frequently, they do not impede communication, as the intended meaning remains clear. This reflects the characteristics of Band 6.0.
