Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the information on the number of participants for five activites at a social club in Melbourne, Australia for the year 2000 to 2020.

Overall, activities include a Film club, Martial arts, Amature dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performances. The number of participants in a film club are at highest number, members of the table tennis suddenly increased, but only Amature dramatics dropped.

Initially, the number of attendees in 2000 at a Film club are about 70%, it remained constant till 2005 and slightly decrseased in 2010 but again rose to maximum limit. Martial arts showed fluctuation between 35% to about 45% in 10 years. But subsequently, players in Table tennis at first are 25% which slightly rose in 2005 then fall in 2010 to less then 20%, and suddenly surge to 60% in 2020.

On the other hand, in 2005 people are not interested in Musical performances but with the time interest developed and grew up to 15%. Participants in Amateur dramatics rate plummeted which reached from 25% to atleast 3%

In conclusion, from 2000 to 2020 Film club , tabble tennis and musical performances members increased. In contrast, only members of amateur dramatics loose their interest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting information from the line graph regarding participants across five activities from 2000 to 2020. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, the student writes that the Film club was "about 70%" in 2000 and that Martial arts showed fluctuation between "35% to about 45%" (using percentages instead of raw numbers or misreading the scale). Furthermore, some trends are imprecisely reported or exaggerated. While an overview is attempted, it lacks clarity and precision due to these numerical misreadings. Therefore, the task response is partially hindered by inaccurate data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, body paragraphs detailing specific trends, and a concluding sentence. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed due to awkward transitions and unclear referencing. Cohesive devices such as "On the other hand" and "In conclusion" are used, but their deployment is somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is attempted, but the overall structure feels slightly fragmented due to short, choppy sentences and abrupt shifts between categories.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to data trends, such as "plummeted," "fluctuation," and "surge." However, there are noticeable spelling errors ("activites," "Amature," "decrseased," "tabble," "loose") and awkward word choices ("members of amateur dramatics loose their interest"). The misuse of percentage signs for absolute numbers also impacts lexical precision. The vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but errors in spelling and word form occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complexity often result in grammatical errors. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues ("The number of participants in a film club are at highest number," "people are not interested") and awkward phrasing ("players in Table tennis at first are 25%"). Punctuation and tense consistency are also flawed in places. While basic meaning is generally conveyed, frequent errors in grammar and mechanics prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
