Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of participants for five activities in a social center in Melbourne, Australia over 20 years.

Overall, these activities include Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performances. Film club was liked by everone and remained the priority in these years, table tennis developed interest and showed dramatic increase. In contrast, Amateur lost the members and dropped at the end of the period.

In 2000, film club gained most of the interest of the people which significantly rose, but showed slight decline in 2010, before it reached to a maximun limit. Started roughly from 64 and reached to 70 at the end of the era. Martial arts fluctuated over these years from 33 to about 35.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting on the five activities shown in the graph and attempting to make comparisons and identify trends. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, which outlines the main general patterns such as the Film club remaining the most popular and Table tennis seeing a dramatic increase. However, the overview and detail paragraphs contain some inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that the Film club 'reached to a maximun limit... reached to 70 at the end', whereas it actually finished around 66. Similarly, Amateur dramatics is said to drop to 'almost 3', when the graph indicates it ended at around 6. Despite these minor misreadings of the precise data points, the main trends are successfully captured.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is arranged into four paragraphs with a clear overall progression from an introduction and overview to specific body paragraphs detailing individual activities. However, paragraphing is somewhat erratic, with the second paragraph functioning as a hybrid overview and body detail. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'Than comes musical performances' and 'Started roughly from 64'. Referencing is generally clear, though transitions between sentences can feel abrupt, indicating a moderate level of cohesion that aligns with Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'dramatic increase', 'fluctuated', and 'significantly dropped'. However, there are several lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text, including 'everone' (spelling error), 'Amateur' used as a noun instead of 'Amateur dramatics', and awkward phrasing like 'liked by everone' and 'reached to the limit'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5 or solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The line graph illustrates...' and 'while it started from 15 then grew constantly...'. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors, including missing prepositions or awkward prepositional usage ('reached to', 'dropped at the end'), run-on clauses linked improperly with commas ('Table tennis gained a lot of interest... it started...'), and minor tense inconsistencies. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication, placing the performance securely in Band 5.5 to 6.0.
