Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all the key features of the graph, presenting an adequate overview and reporting data for the five activities across the 2000-2020 period. The student correctly identifies the film club as the most popular activity and amateur dramatics as the one experiencing a significant decline, alongside the rising trends in table tennis and musical performances. However, there are some minor data inaccuracies and over-generalisations; for instance, the writer states that musical performances started in 2005, whereas the graph indicates zero participants in 2000 and 2005, with data only appearing from 2010 onwards. Additionally, some figures are slightly approximated or loosely reported (e.g., 'around 65 contestants' in 2000). Nevertheless, the core requirements of Task 1 are met, and all parts of the visual data are addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is structured logically into four distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs grouping the activities, and a brief concluding sentence. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'However', and 'Whereas'. However, referencing and paragraph cohesion sometimes feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. For example, the transition between sentences within the body paragraphs can be disjointed, and the single-sentence conclusion is overly brief. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the internal logical flow between sentences occasionally falters.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'tremendously', 'dramatic fall', and 'participants'. However, there are several lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text. For instance, 'illustatres' (spelling error), 'contestents' (spelling and inappropriate collocation for social centre attendees), and 'least number of people' instead of 'the fewest'. Furthermore, phrases like 'the trend increases over the time' and 'the interest in Musical performances have started to developed' show persistent issues with word formation and collocation that slightly hinder precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Musical performances had least number', 'the interest... have started to developed', 'very few people was interested'), missing articles ('in year between'), and awkward phrasing ('In year between 2000 to 2005 the Amateur dramatics had'). Complex sentences are attempted, but they frequently contain errors that cause some minor difficulty for the reader, though communication is not severely impeded.
