Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illustrates the changes in the number of participants for five activities in a social center in Melbourne, Australia over 20 years.
Overall, these activities include Film club, Martial arts, Amateur dramatics, Table tennis and Musical performances. Film club was liked by everone and remained the priority in these years, Table tennis developed interest and showed dramatic increase. In contrast, Amateur lost the members and dropped at the end of the period.
In 2000, film club gained most of the interest of the people which significantly rose, but showed slight decline in 2010, before it reached to a maximum limit. Started roughly from 64 and reached to 70 at the end of the era. Martial arts fluctuated over these years from 33 to about 35.
Table tennis gained a lot of interest over 2010 to 2020, it started from 15 then grew constantly and reached to the limit which was about 50. Then came musical performances at first 5 years it had no members then from 2005 people started to participate and suddenly rose to 18 at the end of the 2020. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting on the five activities and making general comparisons across the 20-year period. An overview is attempted in the second paragraph, mentioning the most prominent trends (e.g., the Film club remaining popular and Table tennis showing a dramatic increase). However, the overview contains some inaccuracies or overly casual phrasing, such as 'Film club was liked by everone'. Data selection is generally relevant, though some figures contain slight inaccuracies compared to the source text (e.g., stating amateur dramatics dropped to 'almost 3' instead of around 6, and noting musical performances reached 18 in 2020 when it was closer to 18-20). Despite these minor deviations, the main features and trends are adequately outlined, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs categorising the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the body details. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. Expressions like 'Then came musical performances at first 5 years' lack smooth transitions, and referencing is sometimes unclear. Cohesive devices are used, but their application can feel repetitive or slightly disjointed, leading to a Band 6.0 performance for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'illustrates', 'fluctuated', 'significantly rose', and 'dramatic increase'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'everone', 'Amateur' used as a noun instead of 'Amateur dramatics', and awkward collocations like 'reached to a maximum limit'. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these inaccuracies slightly hinder precision. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the main message, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and subordinate time clauses (e.g., 'before it reached to a maximum limit', 'from 2005 people started to participate'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward prepositions, such as 'reached to' instead of 'reached', missing articles ('film club'), and run-on sentences with comma splices. Nevertheless, the errors do not impede overall communication, and meaning remains clear throughout, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
