Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line chart illustrates the information on the numbers of participants for various activities at single social centre in Melbourne, Australia between the period 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the maximum participants were from the film club and they remained at the highest position throughout the period. However, the contestents from the table tennis showed the dramatic rise in the later years, whereas, the numbers of participants showed the rise and fall in the martial arts.
To begin with, the maximum participants were from film club because from starting their value remained at the top, which was nearly 64 in 2000, but this value decreased in 2005 and 2010 and reached approximately 61 and 60 respectively. However, in 2015 and 2020, the numbers of contestents increased and reached around 65 and 67 respectively. Moreover, in the martial arts the participants remained at second highest position, which was nearly 37 in 2000, this showed fluctuation in the middle and ended with value approximately 36 in 2020,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all key features of the graph, selecting and reporting main trends across the five activities between 2000 and 2020. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominance of the film club and the dramatic rise in table tennis. However, there are some minor data inaccuracies in the body paragraphs; for instance, the writer states that amateur dramatics started at approximately 28 and increased to around 30 in 2005, whereas the graph shows it rose from 26 to 28, and musical performances started at zero in 2000 and 2005 rather than starting with the least number in 2005. Despite these slight misreadings of the data, the main comparisons are adequately made and the overall response fulfils the requirements of Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs detailing the categories. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'Moreover', although some transitions like 'Strolling forth' are awkward and inappropriate for an academic essay. Paragraphing is used adequately to group related ideas, but referencing is occasionally imprecise, which disrupts the natural flow of information. Overall, the essay presents a coherent structure, but cohesion suffers from some mechanical or unnatural linking expressions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the task, using terms such as 'participants', 'fluctuation', 'decrease', and 'dramatic rise'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'contestents' instead of 'contestants' or 'participants', and 'single social centre' instead of 'a single social centre'. Less common lexical items are attempted but not always used with full precision or correct collocation. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but errors prevent it from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'while the numbers of participants showed the rise and fall'. However, grammatical errors occur with some frequency, particularly regarding articles ('at single social centre', 'from film club') and prepositional phrasing ('between the period 2000 to 2020'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors occasionally distract the reader, they do not impede overall communication.
