Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graph provides information about the participation of people in various activities at a social centre in Melbourne from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, it illustrates that the film club remained the most popular, and participation in table tennis increased threefold in recent years. Meanwhile, the number of participants in musical performances and amateur dramatics was relatively small, and martial arts had a decent level of participation.

The number of participants in the film club and martial arts remained quite stable throughout the period of 2000–2020, at approximately 65 for the film club and 35 for martial arts.

Table tennis and musical performance's engagement among people increased significantly from 2000 to 2020. The number of table tennis participants surged overwhelmingly from 16 in 2000 to 54 in 2020, while musical performance had 20 participants in 2020 since its start in 2005. However, people are losing interest in amateur dramatics, and hence the participants' count dropped from 25 to 5 over the given twenty years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, making relevant comparisons, and presenting a clear overview. The student accurately identifies the film club as the most popular activity throughout the 2000-2020 period and highlights the significant growth in table tennis alongside the decline in amateur dramatics. Data points are generally accurate, such as noting the surge in table tennis from 16 to 54 and the stable figures for the film club and martial arts. Minor discrepancies in specific numerical readings, such as quoting amateur dramatics dropping from 25 to 5 rather than 26 to 6, are well within acceptable margins for visual data interpretation. The information is well-selected and directly supports the requirements of an academic task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. It begins with an effective introductory statement, moves into a concise overview paragraph, and then breaks down specific trends into body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate general observations from detailed data comparisons. Cohesive devices are handled competently, using linking words and phrases such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'However' to guide the reader through the data smoothly. Although referencing and transitions are generally clear, slightly more varied cohesive structures could elevate the response further, but the current layout ensures excellent readability and logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate and appropriate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range for flexibility and precision. The student successfully employs less common lexical items such as 'participation', 'proportion', 'surge', and 'relatively stable'. Word choice and collocations are mostly natural, as seen in phrases like 'remained quite stable throughout the period' and 'losing interest in amateur dramatics'. There are minor infelicities, such as 'musical performance's engagement among people', which sounds slightly unnatural compared to standard academic phrasing. However, the lexical range allows the writer to convey precise trends effectively without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, including relative clauses and comparative forms such as 'while musical performance had 20 participants in 2020 since its start in 2005.' There are frequent error-free sentences, and the student maintains good control over grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Minor mechanical slips occur, such as the singular/plural mismatch in 'musical performance's engagement', but these do not impede communication. The control over tense usage is strong, appropriately shifting between past data points and general statements about trends over the twenty-year period, representing a solid performance within this criterion.
