Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover all five categories in the graph over the specified period from 2000 to 2020. However, there are notable inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that table tennis started with 18 players and reached the peak of half in the year 2020, whereas the graph shows 16 rising to 54. Similarly, the overview contains awkward expressions and inaccuracies, such as claiming amateur dramatics drops to the most least. While the main trends are identified—such as the upward trend in table tennis and the downward trend in amateur dramatics—the precision required for a higher band is lacking due to data misinterpretations and vague comparative statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical layout of an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Overall,' 'after slight fluctuations,' and 'while,' but their use is sometimes repetitive or mechanical. Paragraphing is adequate, separating the categories into logical groups. However, the progression within paragraphs feels a bit disjointed due to awkward phrasing and imprecise referencing, such as 'tabble tennis players displays' and 'it also remain at almost 35'. Overall coherence is maintained, but the flow is occasionally disrupted by grammatical and lexical clumsiness.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical range is somewhat limited and repetitive, with frequent spelling mistakes and inaccurate word choices. Examples of errors include 'tabble' instead of 'table', 'catagories' instead of 'categories', and the unidiomatic phrase 'the most least'. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'fluctuations', 'peak', and 'participants', but control is inconsistent. Collocations are occasionally weak, such as 'musical performances have no players' rather than 'participants'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, but frequent errors in word formation and spelling restrict the score to a Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'after slight fluctuations it remains' and 'while musical performances have no players'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'graphic show that tabble tennis players displays' and 'it also remain'. Punctuation is basic, with missing commas in complex sentences. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the writing from achieving a higher band score.
