Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the five activities. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, highlighting that the film club was the most popular and that musical performances and amateur dramatics lagged behind. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reading the data, such as stating that the film club had 'roughly 75 participants in 2000' (when it was around 64) and claiming that martial arts showed the 'most fluctuation' when amateur dramatics and table tennis showed much more dramatic changes. Despite these minor data discrepancies, the response adequately addresses the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then two body paragraphs detailing specific trends. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'To explain', and 'Additionally'. However, some of the transitions and referencing are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as starting a body paragraph with 'To explain'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'participants', 'fluctuation', 'stable', 'soared', and 'elevated'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'number of participants take place' instead of 'taking part', 'remained at top' instead of 'remained at the top', and 'decreased trend' instead of 'downward trend'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of accuracy, but communication is not impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The line graph illustrates the number of participants...' and 'While, Amateur dramatics has 25 participants in 2000 and the decreased trend till 2020...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including tense inconsistencies (mixing present and past tenses inappropriately like 'The film club has roughly 75 participants in 2000') and missing articles ('has above 50 participants'). Punctuation and comma splices also occur, but meaning remains generally clear.
