Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and selecting key data points for the five activities across the 2000 to 2020 period. An overview is provided, highlighting the general upward trend of table tennis and musical performances alongside the declines in martial arts and amateur dramatics. However, some of the specific data points reported contain inaccuracies when compared against the visual data; for instance, the writer states that film club participation 'decreased to 61 from 60 in 5 years', which is confused, and amateur dramatics is stated to have dropped 'down to 3 in 2020' rather than approximately 6. Despite these minor data reading discrepancies, the overall main features and comparisons are successfully addressed, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then two body paragraphs detailing the specific data. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'while', and 'and after that', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive ('followed the increasing trend', 'followed decline trend'). Paragraphing is present and appropriate for a Task 1 response, ensuring the information flows reasonably well from general trends to specific figures, achieving a solid Band 6 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common collocations and vocabulary related to graph reporting, such as 'illustrates', 'upward trend', and 'declined'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'amount of participant' instead of 'number of participants', 'bustle of activities', 'contestant' instead of 'participants', and repeated spelling errors like 'decreses'. These errors occasionally detract from the reading experience, but communication is not impeded, placing the response securely in Band 5.5 to 6.0, rounded to 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conjunctions such as 'while film club followed a little declined trend but after 2010 it goes up'. However, control over grammar and tense consistency is inconsistent. There are numerous grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('participant... was', 'it goes up'), awkward phrasing ('it jumped to 63 in 2015 and 66 in 2020'), and punctuation flaws. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 6.5.
