Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting information on the various activities shown in the line graph, including the Film club, table tennis, musical performances, amateur dramatics, and material arts. An overview or opening is attempted, but the response suffers from several inaccurate data points and a lack of a clear, overarching summary of the main trends. For example, the student states that the film club started at 65 in 2000, whereas the chart shows approximately 64, and misreads the final value. Furthermore, the response is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence at the end (\u201treached at the same numabe”). Due to the inaccurate data reporting, incomplete final sentence, and lack of a well-developed overview, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows an attempt to structure the information into paragraphs, but the logical flow and progression are hindered by poor paragraphing choices and abrupt transitions. Sentences are placed together without clear grouping by trend or category, making the structure feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as “than they slightly declined” (using “than” instead of \u201kthen”) and “in contrast” which does not logically link the data that follows. Referencing and referencing pronouns are occasionally unclear. Overall, the organization displays some basic structure but lacks clear overall progression, aligning with Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, relying heavily on basic descriptive terms such as “slightly declined,” “gradually increased,” and “lowest figure.” There are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including “Material arts” instead of “Martial arts,” “intially” instead of “initially,” “than” instead of “then,” and “sround” instead of “around.” These lexical inaccuracies and the restricted range of vocabulary mean the response sits comfortably within the Band 5.0 descriptor range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex attempts contain grammatical errors or awkward phrasing, such as “Amateur dramatics participants begin at sround 18 then it gradually declined with intersecting with table tennis participants in 2010...” Frequent errors in tense consistency, prepositions, and sentence completeness are present, and the response notably ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence fragment. While basic meaning is usually conveyed, the high frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors causes difficulty for the reader, matching the Band 5.0 descriptors.
