Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting information on the five activities across the given timeframe. However, the overview is somewhat confused, with phrases like 'table tennis rose to the maximum, after decreasing' which do not clearly summarise the main trends. Furthermore, several reported details contain factual inaccuracies when compared against the visual data. For instance, the student states that in 2000 table tennis had '28 people' whereas the graph shows 16, and claims it 'surged to 60 in 10 years' when the actual figure in 2010 was 20. Similarly, musical performances are said to have grown up to 20 by 2020, while the chart shows approximately 18. These data misreadings limit the accuracy of the response. Overall, the task is addressed partially, corresponding to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some basic organisation, dividing the information into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical sequencing between sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but ideas within paragraphs are disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'While the trend of amateur dramatics declined' functioning as a standalone fragment or 'While the trend of table tennis increased' leading into confusing data. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making the relationship between ideas difficult to follow at times. These limitations place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 range for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, featuring basic terms related to data and trends such as 'number of participants', 'trend', 'increased', and 'declined'. However, the range is limited and repetitive, and there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'film club remained the highest number' (instead of the highest participation or number of participants) and 'came in interest' instead of 'gained interest' or 'emerged'. Spelling is mostly accurate, but vocabulary limitations and occasional imprecise phrasing cause some difficulty and confusion for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical. Examples include dangling modifiers and awkward phrasing like 'Participants at film club always remained the highest from the period 2000 to 2020, a slight fall is shown in 2010', which results in a comma splice. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing subjects or verbs ('there only 28 people') and tense inconsistencies. While these errors do not completely obscure the intended meaning, they occur frequently and cause difficulty for the reader, reflecting a Band 5.0 performance.
