Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all parts of the prompt by describing the trends for the five activities across the given timeframe. However, there are numerous noticeable inaccuracies in data interpretation when checked against the factual source. For instance, the student states that table tennis 'rose to the maximum, after decreasing' and later claims that in 2000 there were 'only 28 people which declined to 20 in 2020, but it surged to 60', which contradicts both the graph and their own timeline. Furthermore, the data points provided for martial arts and musical performances contain factual errors regarding the chart's actual values. While an overview is attempted, these significant data misreadings limit the quality of the response, placing it in Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into four paragraphs, including a brief introduction and an overview. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by contradictory statements and confusing chronological links, such as 'While the trend of table tennis increased, in 2000 there were only 28 people which declined to 20 in 2020...'. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., dangling modifiers and unclear pronoun antecedents). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is weak, resulting in an overall arrangement that feels disjointed in places. This performance aligns with Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses a sufficient range of basic vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'participants', 'trend', 'declined', and 'fluctuation'. However, there are frequent inappropriate word choices and collocations, such as 'came in interest' instead of 'emerged' or 'gained popularity', and misuse of verbs regarding data direction. Less common vocabulary items are attempted but often executed with inaccuracy. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is insufficient for higher bands due to imprecise vocabulary usage that occasionally impedes clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as comma splices and dangling clauses ('after decreasing', 'a slight fall is shown in 2010. But again rose...'). Error frequency is noticeable, and some sentences cause difficulty for the reader in untangling the intended meaning. Punctuation is also erratic in places, restricting the score to a Band 5.
