Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully identifies the main activities and covers the overall time period from 2000 to 2020. An overview is attempted, noting that the film club remained popular while amateur dramatics decreased. Key features are reported, such as the film club maintaining the highest numbers and table tennis experiencing significant growth from 16 to 54 participants. However, some specific data points contain inaccuracies or vague references, such as stating martial arts started at 45 (actual was 36) and minor confusions with figures. The response meets the minimum word count requirement and covers all major trends, placing it squarely in the Band 6 category.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is arranged with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body section, providing a coherent overall arrangement. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'whereas', and 'throughout the period' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or are awkwardly structured (e.g., 'whereas, the participants for table tennis... are 15,25 and 45'). Paragraphing is present, but the body of the report is clumped into overly long and dense paragraphs rather than being broken down logically by activity or trend. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow is occasionally disrupted by punctuation and spacing errors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating descriptive terms like 'fluctuating trend', 'rapidly increased', and 'participants'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'intrested' instead of 'interested', 'decresed', 'material arts' instead of 'martial arts', and 'flactuating'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. While communication is not impeded, these frequent mechanical and spelling errors prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'whereas' and relative time markers. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as missing articles ('number of paricipants'), subject-verb agreement issues ('participants for table tennis... are'), and run-on sentences with comma splices. Punctuation and spacing are also problematic (e.g., missing spaces after commas). While some error-free simple sentences exist, the high frequency of grammatical and mechanical slips restricts the score to Band 5.0.
