Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all parts of the task by reporting the main activities and overall trends, noting that the film club remained the most popular category and mentioning the introduction of musical performances in 2005. However, there are several significant inaccuracies in the data reported. For instance, the student states that amateur dramatics were "25 20 45 and 50 in years 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020", whereas the chart actually shows a sharp decline from around 28 in 2005 down to approximately 6 in 2020. Similarly, the data cited for martial arts and film club contain generalisations or inaccuracies. Consequently, the response only partially satisfies the requirements of Task 1 due to misinterpretation of key figures and trends, placing it in Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay has a basic overall structure, featuring a brief introduction and an attempt to group data by categories in the body sentences. However, paragraphing is poorly handled, as the main body consists of one dense, unformatted block of text. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes awkward, such as "While in 2020 there were almost 50 participants" starting a new sentence fragment. The logical progression of ideas is hindered by abrupt transitions between sentences, making the flow somewhat mechanical and disjointed. Referencing and linking could be substantially improved to guide the reader through the data more clearly. This level of organisation aligns with a Band 5.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate to describe basic trends, employing terms like "participants", "activities", and "increased gradually". However, there is a spelling error in the opening sentence ("informtion") and a noticeable lack of variety and precision. The student repeats simple verbs and noun phrases throughout the text, such as "The number of participants" and "in number". Attempts to use less common vocabulary are very limited, and some descriptions of data points are imprecise. While communication of the general subject matter is not entirely blocked, the restricted lexical range and errors prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 5.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex forms are frequently flawed. For example, the sentence "Musical performances which were started in 2005 according to the graph, their numbers increased gradually..." suffers from a dangling structure and a comma splice/referencing error. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement, such as "The number of participants in table tennis were..." where the singular subject 'number' should take a singular verb. Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing commas in lists of numbers. Because errors occur frequently and occasionally impede smooth reading, a score of 5.0 is warranted.
