Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the main categories, such as film club, table tennis, and musical performances. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reading the data from the graph. For instance, the student states that Table tennis started with 15 participants in 2000 and reached 55 in 2010, whereas the correct figures are approximately 16 and 20 respectively, with the major surge happening after 2010. Furthermore, the overview is rather vague, merely stating that the trend shows a fluctuating period without highlighting the most significant overall patterns, such as the dramatic rise of table tennis versus the steep decline of amateur dramatics. Due to inaccurate data reporting and underdeveloped overview features, this falls into the Band 5.0 range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical layout of introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different activities. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In 2000', 'similarly', and 'On the other hand', but some transitions are misused or awkward, such as starting the overview with 'it is evident that trend shows'. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, and the progression of information is discernible, although the weak data handling disrupts clear logical flow. Overall, the organizational structure meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary relevant to the visual data, including terms like 'participants', 'category', 'gradually', and 'rose'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'trend shows a fluctuating period', 'Table tennis activity reported with', and 'decline in trent'. The misspelling of 'trend' as 'trent' and awkward phrasing like 'reported with' detract from the precision of the writing. The lexical range is sufficient for the task but lacks flexibility, placing it firmly in the Band 5.0 to 5.5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Individuals who took part in film club were 64 in 2000, but it dropped to 61 in 2010.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout, including subject-verb agreement issues ('trend shows') and missing articles or prepositions ('Table tennis activity reported with'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies cause some minor strain for the reader. These issues reflect the descriptors for Band 5.0.
