Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on several activities from the line graph, identifying the Film Club as the highest overall and noting trends such as the growth of musical performances and table tennis, alongside the decline of amateur dramatics. However, the response falls short in terms of data support and overview generation. The student states that participation in each activity was nearly the same between 2000 and 2005, which is inaccurate for Film Club (64) versus Table Tennis (16). Furthermore, the overview lacks a clear synthesis of the overall trends, such as the general rise in popularity for most activities except amateur dramatics. The inclusion of unsupported or vague figures like "nearly 65" without clear comparative integration limits the development of the response, placing it at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at logical grouping of ideas. However, the progression between and within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed. For instance, the second paragraph abruptly claims that participation numbers were nearly the same from 2000 to 2005, followed by fragmented observations. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes misused, as seen in the sudden shift with 'Furthermore, people who playing table tennis...' where grammatical errors disrupt the flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing lacks precise overarching direction. While there is an overall structure, the mechanical use of cohesion and occasional lack of clear progression lead to a Band 5.5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description of visual data, employing terms like 'fluctuated', 'increased rapidly', and 'plateu phase' (spelled 'plateu'). However, there are notable spelling and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'activities mention' instead of 'mentioned', 'no participants' instead of 'no participants', and 'people who playing' instead of 'people who played' or 'playing'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common lexical items are hampered by these slips and spelling errors. Although communication is not severely impeded, the lexical limitations and errors firmly place this response at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the numbers of participants in each activities nearly same' (missing verb 'were' and plural error 'activity'), 'there was no participants' (plural disagreement), and 'people who playing table tennis increased' (non-standard relative clause reduction). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips occur in nearly every sentence, reducing the proportion of error-free structures. These persistent errors can occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptor for Band 5.0.
