Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph illustrates the change in number of participants across five different sports at a social centre in Melboune, Australia from 2000 to 2020.

Overall, number of participants in Table tennis and Musical performance increased while number of sport persons in Amateur dramatics decreased over the goiven period. In addition to this, participation in Film club and Martial arts remained constant by the end of the period with some fluctuations.

In the first year, the number of participants in Film club was around 65. By the final year, it reached at the same number of participation after creating a small valley in 2010 becoming the most participated sports in all years. Similarly, the proportion of sport persons for Martial arts settled at 35 in 2020 after gentle fluctuatuions in the previous years.

On the other hand, significant changes are illustrated for remaining sports. For Amateur dramatics, number of participants started from around 28, increased slightly to year 2005 and then decresed gradually to about 5 in 2020. Whereas, there was an increment in the number of participants in Table tennis form 15 to 20 between 2000 and 2010. Then it saw a steep increment reaching 50 in 2020. Similarly, number of participants in musical performance remained null up to 2005. Then it saw a gradual hike reaching approximately 15 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the main trends and reporting the key data points across the five activities. The overview accurately highlights that Table tennis and Musical performances increased, Amateur dramatics decreased, and the others remained relatively stable. Key features, such as Film club starting and ending around the same high level, and Table tennis experiencing a steep rise, are well supported with figures from the chart. Minor inaccuracies occur, such as referring to all activities as 'sports' (e.g., 'five different sports', 'most participated sports'), whereas film club and musical performances are not strictly sports. However, the task is successfully fulfilled with appropriate selection and reporting of main features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is logically organised and progresses clearly from an introduction and overview to detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on specific groupings of data (steady activities versus changing activities). Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to link ideas, such as 'In the first year', 'On the other hand', and 'Whereas'. However, there are some minor mechanical links or awkward transitions, such as starting sentences with 'Whereas,' without an independent clause attached properly, and minor referencing slips like 'remaining sports' when not all items are sports. Overall, the logical structure and progression are clear throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to a task 1 response, employing terms such as 'fluctuations', 'gentle fluctuations', 'gradual hike', and 'steep increment'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and inappropriate word choices, such as calling the activities 'sports' repeatedly ('sport persons', 'most participated sports'), spelling errors ('Melboune', 'goiven', 'fluctuatuions', 'decresed', 'form'), and awkward phrasing like 'reached at the same number' or 'creating a small valley'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and varied structures ('while number of sport persons... decreased over the given period', 'after creating a small valley...'). There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('change in number of participants', 'number of participants in Film club'), incorrect prepositions ('reached at'), and multiple typos ('form' instead of 'from'). Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are understandable and communication is not impeded, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
