Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting on the main activities shown in the line graph, providing an overall trend and some specific data points. However, there are several inaccurate data figures cited in the text. For example, the student states that the film club started at around 70 (actual is 64), and that table tennis rose from around 25 to 55 (actual is 16 to 54). Additionally, musical performances started at 0 in 2000, not 2005. Furthermore, the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum, containing 146 words. Because of the data inaccuracies and the word count penalty, the task achievement is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay has a basic structure with an introduction, an overview sentence, and supporting body details. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped, and sentences are often disjointed. Cohesive devices are used minimally and somewhat awkwardly, such as 'To begin with' and 'while opposite side was true'. Logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and abrupt transitions between the distinct activities. Referencing and linking could be much smoother to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with several lexical errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'ratios of participants' instead of 'number of participants', 'opposite side was true' instead of 'the reverse was true', and 'beginnering' instead of 'beginning'. The student attempts some less common terms like 'significantly increased' and 'declined steadily', but control over word choice and spelling is inconsistent, which occasionally strains communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is low. There are frequent errors in verb tense, preposition use, and subject-verb agreement. For instance, 'the highest numbers of participants was film club' lacks parallel structure and correct verb agreement, 'musical performances was begin' mixes past tense with a base verb, and 'approximantly' contains a spelling error. Punctuation is basic, and these recurring structural errors impede fluency.
