Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons across the five activities between 2000 and 2020. The overview effectively captures the dramatic rise in table tennis, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the relative stability of film club and martial arts. Key data points are accurately cited, such as table tennis peaking in 2020 and film club remaining the highest throughout the period. However, there are minor omissions and slightly underdeveloped details regarding musical performances, which are only briefly mentioned. Overall, the response meets the requirements for Band 7, providing a clear overview and supporting main trends with relevant data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response features a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped reasonably well by activity across paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'In contrast', and 'Despite' are used to signal comparisons, although some referencing is slightly awkward, as seen in the final paragraph where multiple trends are bundled together ('availability of martial arts remained the same approximately at 36'). Paragraphing is utilised, though paragraph breaks could be better managed to separate distinct categories of trends more cleanly. Cohesion is generally clear, placing this performance solidly at Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 due to occasional mechanical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'significant trend', 'fluctuations', 'notable upward trend', and 'marked decline'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'individuals that attend in numerous activities' instead of 'participate in', and 'musical performances gone through a upward trend' which contains grammatical and lexical slips. Some phrases are slightly unnatural, but meaning is communicated successfully throughout. These limitations place the lexical range at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses like 'Even though musical performances gone through a upward trend...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as missing auxiliary verbs ('musical performances gone through'), incorrect prepositions ('attend in'), and missing articles. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. The errors do not impede communication, matching the Band 6 descriptor where a mix of simple and complex structures is accompanied by frequent minor errors.
