Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all the main features of the chart, noting that the Film club was the most popular throughout and describing the general trajectories of other categories, such as the rise of table tennis and the decline of amateur dramatics. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation and reporting. For instance, the text claims that amateur dramatics reached zero by 2020 (whereas the value is approximately 6) and that musical performances started at zero in 2005 (the chart shows zero in 2000 and 2005, with data beginning in 2010). Furthermore, the overview contains contradictory statements, initially stating table tennis was second highest but later mentioning fluctuations rather than a steady upward trend. These lapses place the response in Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay attempts an overall structure, beginning with an introduction and attempting an overview and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing transitions and poor sequencing. For instance, the second paragraph abruptly switches from the Film club to table tennis and martial arts without clear linking. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting sentences with 'Thirdly,' or 'Furthermore,' where they do not logically fit the flow of ideas. Paragraphing is also poorly handled, with related ideas jumbled together and awkward breaks. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the comparisons between activities. These issues correspond to Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate vocabulary to describe general trends, such as 'increased,' 'declined,' and 'fluctuated.' However, the range is limited, and there is noticeable repetition of basic words and phrases like 'over that time period' and 'number of participants.' There are also word choice errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'Film club remained the highest activity' instead of 'the most popular activity' and 'the highest impact occurred in table tennis' instead of 'the most significant growth.' Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations and lexical inaccuracies cause some friction for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent errors in sentence structure, missing articles, and awkward prepositions, such as 'at start in 2000' instead of 'at the start in 2000' and 'participants 55' instead of 'reached 55.' Run-on sentences and punctuation issues are also present, such as '55.Therefore, the next activity martial gradually increased.' While meaning is generally retrievable despite the frequent errors, the lack of control over complex structures prevents the writing from achieving a higher band, making Band 5 appropriate.
