Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, identifying the stability of the film club, the fluctuations in martial arts, the steep decline in amateur dramatics, and the significant growth in table tennis and musical performances. However, the overview is weak, integrated awkwardly into the opening sentence without a clear summary of the overall trends. Furthermore, there are some minor misreadings of the data, such as stating that musical performances started in 2005 with no participants when the graph shows zero in 2000 and 2005 before rising in 2010. While all activities are addressed and supported with data points, the lack of a proper overarching summary keeps this at a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into paragraphs, with an introduction followed by individual body paragraphs for each activity. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor referencing, repetitive sentence structures, and awkward linking words such as 'where,', 'while the,', and 'till then end'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Cohesive devices are either misused or punctuated incorrectly, with comma splices and run-on clauses appearing throughout. For example, sentences frequently begin with conjunctions or prepositional phrases followed immediately by commas breaking the flow. While the overall arrangement of discussing one activity per paragraph provides some basic structure, the execution lacks fluency and clear logical organisation, aligning with Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited and repetitive range of vocabulary suited to the task, such as 'activities', 'participants', 'rise', 'falls', and 'numbers'. There are numerous word choice and collocation issues, including 'worst activity which face that much down fall' and 'grow more than the any other'. Spelling errors are also present, such as 'begeing', 'n8umbers', and 'deacades'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with a high degree of inaccuracy, and the frequent repetition of basic terms restricts the lexical range to a Band 5.0 level, where vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic information but causes noticeable strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The film club have', 'the participants was'), tense consistency, and article usage. Punctuation is particularly problematic, featuring numerous misplaced commas, lack of capitalisation at sentence beginnings, and run-on sentences. Complex structures are often faulty and cause difficulty for the reader. Because errors are frequent throughout the response and impede smooth reading, this performance meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
