Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by identifying main features and making relevant comparisons across the given period. The overview correctly highlights key trends, such as the film club having the highest participation and the musical performance club starting with zero participants. However, there are several factual inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data in the body paragraphs; for instance, the student states that table tennis and amateur dramatics merged in the middle and that amateur dramatics shot upwards to 50 individuals, whereas the chart shows amateur dramatics dropping significantly to 6 participants while table tennis rose to 54. These significant data misreadings prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an overall structure with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with several very short paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'Towards the middle' and 'On the othe rhand'. The logical progression is also hindered by the factual misinterpretations of the chart data, making some comparisons confusing or difficult to follow for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'momentum' and 'participants'. However, there are numerous spelling and lexical errors throughout the text, including typos like 'fil club', 'themost', 'perfomance', 'cub', 'contant', 'strucure', and 'crosing'. Word choice and phrasing are sometimes unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'fell staright in a downwards motion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The table tennis and amateur dramatics has'), missing articles, and punctuation/possessive errors like 'it's momentum' instead of 'its'. Additionally, typographical errors like spaces in words ('othe rhand') detract from the overall accuracy of the writing.
