Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the given period. The overview effectively captures the primary trends, noting that table tennis and musical performances increased while amateur dramatics declined, and film club and martial arts remained relatively stable. Key data points are correctly identified, such as the initial and final figures for amateur dramatics and the significant rise in table tennis. However, there are some minor imprecisions in reporting specific figures for the film club and martial arts sections, and the explanation of the film club trend is slightly tangled ('although the number of participant was higher in that one activity over the period, with nearly 65 candidates initially'). Nevertheless, the task is well-covered overall, placing it securely at Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organized into a clear logical sequence with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to specific activity groupings. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', 'Looking at', and 'By contrast'. However, paragraphing and referencing occasionally become slightly mechanical or confused. For instance, the transition into the third paragraph ('Looking at the candidates of Film club and Martial arts...') introduces grammatical entanglement and unclear referencing when attempting to contrast the two activities. Paragraph 5 is also quite brief. Despite these minor cohesive slips, there is a clear overall progression that warrants a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'pursuits', 'fluctuations', 'hovered', 'dramatic increase', and 'declined steadily'. However, there are several word form and collocation errors, such as 'number of participant' instead of 'participants', 'candidates' used interchangeably for activity participants, and awkward phrasing such as 'higher in that one activity over the period'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical inaccuracies and repetitive reliance on words like 'participants' and 'candidates' prevent the score from reaching a higher band, placing it comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('whereas Film club and Martial arts participant remained...', 'although the number of participant was higher...'). However, control over grammar is inconsistent, leading to noticeable errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('participant remained', 'Musical performances which were initially 0... climbed to 20' where the relative clause structure is flawed) and incomplete or tangled syntactic structures in the third paragraph. While these errors do not completely obscure meaning, they occur frequently enough to impede smooth reading at times, justifying a Band 6.0.
