Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart depicits the changes in the number of the participants in five different activities between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the film club remained the most popular activity throughout the period, although its participants figures fluctuated slightly. In contrast, table tennis experienced the most significant growth and become the second most popular activity by 2020. Meanwhile, participation in amateur dramatics declined considerably, while musical performances increased gradually.
In 2000, approximately 64 people participated in the film club, making it the most popular activity. This figure slighlty fell to 61 in 2005 and 59 in 2010. But in the meantime it has increased gradually and has approximately 62 in 2015 and 66 in 2020. Moreover, participation in the martial arts was considerably lower at roughly 38 people in 2000. The it decreased to 32 in 2005. But then it increased to 37 in 2010, before falling slighlty and in the end it has approximately 35 participants in 2020.
Table tennis and musical performances showed an upward trend overall. The number of participants in table tennis rose from 18 in 2000 to 20 in 2005 and remain steady in 2010. It then increased sharply to around 34 in 2015 and reached at its peak to 52 in 2020. Similarly, music performances had no participants in 2000 and 2005 but the figure rose to about 12 in 2010, 16 in 2015 and 18 in 2020. By contrast, amateur dramatics fell from approximately 26 participants in 2000 to 28 in 2005, before declining steadily to around 20 in 2010, 14 in 2015 and only 7 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and reporting the main features and trends of the five activities over the twenty-year period. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the film club remaining the most popular and table tennis experiencing significant growth from 16 to 54 participants. The comparisons between activities are logical and relevant. Although there are a few minor inaccuracies in precise figure reporting (for instance, stating table tennis reached 52 instead of 54 in 2020), these are minor and fall within acceptable approximations for visual data tasks. The overview successfully captures the main trends without getting bogged down in unnecessary data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the individual activity trends. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'Meanwhile', and 'By contrast', which help guide the reader through the data. However, some referencing and transitions in the third paragraph are slightly clunky (e.g., 'But in the meantime it has increased gradually'), and paragraphing could be slightly more balanced. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision when describing trends and data. Less common lexical items and phrases are attempted, such as 'fluctuated slightly', 'significant growth', and 'upward trend'. However, there are some minor word-form errors and awkward collocations, such as 'depicits' instead of 'depicts', 'participants figures', and 'reached at its peak' instead of 'reached its peak'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts various complex structures using subordinate clauses and transition markers. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as tense inconsistencies (e.g., mixing past tense with present perfect structures like 'it has increased gradually and has approximately 62') and minor spelling slips like 'slighlty'. While these errors occur with some frequency, they do not impede communication, and the overall meaning remains clear to the reader.
