Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graph below gives information on the number of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.

The number of participants in the year 2000 to 2020 in the film club activity is highest and stable ranging at nearly 65. But the number of participants in the martial arts is less than film club activity ranging close to 38 participants number and its graph is going up and down in the year 2000 to 2020. The graph for amateur dramatics has fallen down instantly from 25 to 5 in that given years. For the number of participants in table tennis activity has rise up very sharply from 20 to 55 in the year 2010 to 2020. For the musical performances in the year 2000 the number of participants was zero. But in the year 2005 to 2020 the graph of number of participants has risen up to 20.

The overall graph is very positive for the years from 2000 to 2020 in different activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to cover the main features of the graph, correctly identifying the film club as the highest and most stable activity and noting the dramatic drop in amateur dramatics as well as the sharp increase in table tennis. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, the student states that musical performances had zero participants in 2000 and 2005 (which matches the chart), but then claims it rose to 20 by 2020, whereas the chart shows it reaching around 18. Furthermore, the overview provided in the final sentence ('The overall graph is very positive...') is extremely simplistic and vague. While the main trends are addressed, the lack of precision in data description and the weak overview keep this criterion at a Band 5.5 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an overall structure consisting of an introduction, a body paragraph describing the trends, and a very brief concluding sentence. However, the organisation within the body paragraph is weak, as it jumps abruptly between different activities without smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal and repetitive (e.g., 'The number of participants...', 'For the number of participants...', 'But in the year...'), which creates a mechanical feel. Paragraphing is also inadequate, as all body points are crammed into a single block of text alongside the introductory sentence. This results in a disjointed flow, earning a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple phrases like 'number of participants', 'activity', and 'graph'. There are awkward lexical choices and phrasing, such as 'ranging at nearly 65', 'its graph is going up and down', and 'has fallen down instantly'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are largely absent or inaccurate. Spelling is generally acceptable, but word choice and collocation errors are frequent (e.g., 'has rise up very sharply' instead of 'rose sharply'). This demonstrates a limited, repetitive range that aligns with a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense and verb-form mistakes such as 'has rise up very sharply' (instead of 'rose very sharply' or 'has risen sharply'), 'in that given years' (instead of 'in those given years'), and preposition errors like 'in the year 2000 to 2020'. Punctuation is basic. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, this performance fits Band 5.0 descriptors.
