Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of participants for multiple activities at one social centre in Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the number of participants in table tennis and musical performance increased steadily, while film club, martial arts and amateur dramatics decreased dramatically over the period.
In 2000, the number of participants in table tennis rose significantly from about 17 in 2000 to approximately 55 in 2020. There was no change from 2000 to 2005, but the number of participants in musical performance increased steadily over one and a half decades from 0 in 2005 to approximately 18 in 2020. There were fluctuations in martial arts over the two decades from approximately 37 in 2000 to 38 in 2020.
Similarly, the number of participants in the film club decreased dramatically over one decade from approximately 65 in 2000 to 60 in 2010. After 2010, it increased steadily over one decade from approximately 60 to 69 in 2020. Furthermore, the number of participants in amateur dramatics gradually increased over half a decade from about 27 in 2000 to approximately 29 in 2005, and dramatically decreased over one and a half decades from about 29 in 2005 to approximately 8 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an introductory paraphrase, a clear overview, and supporting details for the various activities. However, there are some minor factual inaccuracies regarding the trends described in the body paragraphs. For instance, the overview incorrectly states that film club and martial arts decreased dramatically over the period, whereas the film club actually finished higher in 2020 (66) than in 2000 (64), and martial arts remained relatively stable around the mid-30s. Similarly, in the body paragraphs, the student mischaracterises certain trends, such as claiming the film club decreased between 2000 and 2010 when it dropped only slightly from 64 to 60, followed by an increase. Nevertheless, key features and comparisons are generally highlighted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. The information is divided into sensible paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview into grouped body paragraphs detailing specific activities. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', 'Similarly', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and transitions within sentences occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, and some over-reliance on rigid time phrases is evident. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed body paragraphs, contributing to a coherent overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'illustrates', 'steadily', 'dramatically', 'fluctuations', and 'gradually'. There are some successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, but word choices occasionally clash with the actual data shown in the graph (e.g., describing a slight dip or fluctuation as decreasing 'dramatically'). Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features of the chart, though precision in lexical selection could be improved to better match statistical realities.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses and temporal phrases (e.g., 'while film club, martial arts and amateur dramatics decreased dramatically over the period', 'There was no change from 2000 to 2005, but...'). Grammatical control is fairly good, with many error-free sentences. Minor errors do occur, such as omission of articles in places or slight awkwardness in clause construction (e.g., 'the number of participants in table tennis rose significantly from about 17 in 2000 to approximately 55 in 2020'), but these errors do not impede communication.
