Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student attempts to cover all major features of the graph, identifying general trends and providing specific data points. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the film club and martial arts decreased dramatically over the period, whereas the film club actually ended higher (66) than it started (64), and martial arts remained relatively stable (36 to 36). Furthermore, the overview contains a factual error regarding table tennis and musical performances increasing while film club and martial arts decreased dramatically. Despite these misreadings of the chart, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt comprehensively, warranting a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory sentence, moves to a general overview paragraph, and then breaks down the details in subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used adequately, though with occasional errors or awkward transitions, such as 'Moreovre' and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different groups of activities, although the referencing and logical flow within the body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the essay demonstrates a coherent structure that is easy to follow, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'increased steadily', 'decreased dramatically', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and data reporting, as well as a spelling error ('Moreovre'). Some descriptions of trends contradict the actual visual data provided in the prompt. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey the main ideas, meeting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'while film club, martial arts and amateur dramatics decreased dramatically over the period'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, but they rarely impede communication. Punctuation is generally controlled, and simple structures are typically error-free. The variety of sentence structures and overall control align well with the Band 6 descriptor.
