Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and selecting key data to report. The overview correctly identifies that table tennis and musical performances increased, while film club, martial arts, and amateur dramatics decreased overall, although there are minor inaccuracies in the details (e.g., stating the film club decreased when it actually fluctuated and ended higher, or misinterpreting the overall trend for martial arts). Key features such as the dramatic rise in table tennis and the introduction of musical performances from zero are well highlighted. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of Task 1 effectively, supporting ideas with relevant data from the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized logically with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs separated by trends. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related categories, such as grouping increasing activities and decreasing activities. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and progression become slightly mechanical and confusing in places, particularly when misinterpreting trends within the body paragraphs. Overall cohesion is satisfactory and achieves a logical flow throughout the description.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, using appropriate reporting verbs and descriptors such as 'illustrates', 'increased steadily', 'decreased dramatically', and 'fluctuations'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but word choices occasionally lack precision or contradict the visual data, such as claiming the film club decreased overall when the graph shows an increase from 64 to 66. Spelling and word choice errors are minimal and do not impede communication, placing the performance comfortably within the Band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating temporal clauses and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates the number of participants...', 'while the number of participants... decreased dramatically over the period'). There are frequent error-free sentences demonstrating good control over basic structures. Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with only minor awkwardness in phrasing. Punctuation is well-handled, and errors do not interfere with the reader's understanding, reflecting solid competence in grammar and sentence variety.
