IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below gives information on the numbers of participants for different activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia for the period 2000 to 2020.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the number of participants for multiple activities at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia between 2000 and 2020.
Overall, the number of participants in table tennis and musical performance increased steadily, while the number of participants in film club, martial arts and amateur dramatics decreased dramatically over the period.
In 2000, the number of participants in table tennis went from about 17 to approximately 55 in 2020. Moreover, there was no change from 2000 to 2005, but the number of participants in musical performance increased steadily over one and a half decades from 0 in 2005 to about 18 in 2020. Furthermore, there were fluctuations in martial arts over the two decades from approximately 37 in 2000 to 38 in 2020.
In contrast, the number of participants in the film club decreased from approximately 65 in 2000 to 60 in 2010. After 2010, it increased steadily from approximately 60 to 69 in 2020. Furthermore, the number of participants in amateur dramatics gradually increased over half a decade from about 27 in 2000 to approximately 29 in 2005, and dramatically decreased over one and a half decades from about 29 in 2005 to approximately 8 in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the five categories over the twenty-year period. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the general trends correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the film club 'decreased dramatically over the period' and reached '69 in 2020', whereas the chart shows it finishing around 66. Similarly, the summary of musical performances contains minor contradictions regarding the starting points. Despite these data misreadings, all categories are covered, and key trends are identified, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to specific groupings of data. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In 2000', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast'. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in structuring the report. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, referencing could occasionally be tighter to improve flow between complex comparisons. Overall, the structural framework meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate the information effectively, employing appropriate task-related terms such as 'participants', 'activity', 'social centre', 'fluctuations', and 'steadily'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of success; phrases like 'increased steadily' and 'decreased dramatically' are used correctly. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as grouping table tennis under activities that 'increased steadily' when it experienced a sharp acceleration post-2010, and some slight awkwardness in phrasing. The lexical control is appropriate for a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The candidate uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'The line graph illustrates the number of participants for multiple activities...'). There is a good variety of structures attempting to report complex numerical shifts over time. Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with the majority of sentences being error-free, and minor errors do not impede communication. Punctuation is well-handled. Control of grammar and sentence structures sits comfortably within the Band 7.0 range.
