The given line graph illustrates participation in five different activities named as film club, martial arts, amateur dramatics, table tennis, and musical perfomances at one social centre in Melbourne, Australia in between 2000 and 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons of the five activities over the twenty-year period. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the considerable increase in table tennis, the decline in amateur dramatics, and the sustained popularity of the film club. However, there are some data inaccuracies and confusion in the body paragraphs. For instance, the student states that martial arts began with 'just over 15 number of participants' in 2000, whereas the chart shows it started at approximately 36. This confusion seems to conflate table tennis (which started around 16) with martial arts. Despite these minor data confusions, the key trends are adequately covered, placing this response in Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organized into clear paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then detailed body paragraphs. There is a logical progression of ideas overall. Cohesive devices are used to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'Overall,' 'Whereas,' 'In comparison,' and 'Additionally.' However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, as seen in the phrasing 'just has little fluctuation' and the slightly disjointed transition into the final paragraph. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs occasionally falters due to the confused data points mentioned in Task Achievement.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'considerable increase,' 'gradual decline,' and 'dramatic surge.' However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, as well as a spelling error ('perfomances' instead of 'performances'). The student repeatedly refers to activities as part of an 'industry' (e.g., 'film club industry' and 'music industry'), which is inappropriate in the context of a social centre. Additionally, phrases like 'number of selections' are unnatural. These lexical slips restrict the score to Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'while' and 'whereas.' There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text. Examples include 'in between 2000 and 2020' (should be 'between'), 'through out' (should be 'throughout'), 'become' instead of 'became,' 'the number of participants who opt' instead of 'opted,' and 'number of participants in film club industry was' lacking an article. Furthermore, subject-verb agreement issues appear, such as 'number of participants... were' and 'number of participants... was.' These errors persist but do not seriously impede overall communication.
