Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features, trends, and making relevant comparisons between the activities. The overview clearly highlights the key standout features, noting that the film club recorded the highest numbers while musical performances started at zero before rising. Data points are generally accurate and appropriately selected, such as noting the film club's high fluctuations and the dramatic surge in table tennis participation from around 18 in 2000 to over 50 by 2020. However, there is a slight minor inaccuracy in quoting the initial table tennis figure as 18 instead of 16, and the phrasing regarding martial arts being 'the second-highest category among the remaining three' is a bit confusing since film club was highest and martial arts was second overall. Overall, the task is well-covered.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized logically with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group data by categories or trends. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different groups of activities. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'Overall', and 'then' are employed to guide the reader through the data, although some transition words are repetitive or slightly mechanical in their application. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional clunky sentence structures disrupt the smooth progression of ideas. Logical sequencing is maintained throughout, ensuring that the relationships between the data series are communicated effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully incorporating terms related to graphical data such as 'fluctuated', 'rose steadily', 'surged', and 'fell steadily'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and phrasing are slightly awkward, such as 'recorded 0 number of participants' and 'the table tannis was at around'. Spelling is mostly accurate except for a typo in 'tannis' (tennis). The lexical range is sufficient for the task and allows the writer to convey precise trends, but occasional inaccuracies prevent it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, often utilizing subordinate clauses with 'whereas'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'rose steadily reached around 18' (missing a preposition or conjunction) and 'amateur dramatics category was at around 28 number of participants , and then fell steadily over the time' (superfluous comma placement and slight awkwardness in phrasing). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear. Control over simple structures is good, but complex forms occasionally suffer from minor slips.
